Alan Menken (New Rochelle, Nova York, Estats Units, 22 de juliol de 1949) és un pianista i compositor de cinema estatunidenc guanyador de vuit Oscars i sis Globus d'Or, entre molts d'altres premis. És sobretot conegut pel seu treball en unes quantes pel·lícules animades de Disney, incloent-hi The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Hercules, Pocahontas, Aladdin, and Home on the Range. La seva primera obra reeixida fou el musical de 1982 a off-Broadway Little Shop of Horrors.
Alan Menken va estudiar piano i violí a l'institut, per ingressar després a la Universitat de Nova York. Començava la seva carrera com a compositor, però després de conèixer al lletrista Howard Ashman, s'encaminà amb èxit cap al món de teatre musical. Menken i Ashman debutaven amb God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater el 1979, i seguiren col·laborant en espectacles tan reeixits com Her Pilgrim Soul, The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, King David, A Christmas Carol, Weird Romance, i per suposat Little Shop of Horrors.
Aquest darrer espectacle era convertit en pel·lícula el 1986, i el nom de Menken comença a ser associat amb la música de cinema, moment en què és contractat pels estudis de la Disney. Amb col·laboracions amb grans lletristes com el mateix Ashman, Tim Rice i Stephen Schwartz, Menken gairebé obté el monopoli per reactivar les fortunes musicals del departament d'animació de l'estudi, escrivint cançons i bandes sonores que avui dia ja són clàssiques.
Tanmateix, el seu treball de l'any 1997 per la Disney, Hercules, és converteix en un fracàs tant de la crítica com comercial, i Menken abandona momentanemanet el món del cinema per tornar al teatre. Finalment feia el seu retorn el 2004 amb la pel·lícula animada Home on the Range. Malgrat la pel·lícula tornava a ser poc reeixida, l'any 2006 torna amb The Shaggy Dog, sempre per la Disney, sent la seva primera pel·lícula no animada en 15 anys.
