La Copa del Món d'escacs de 2009 fou un torneig d'escacs organitzat per la FIDE, dins del cicle classificatori pel Campionat del món de 2011. Es va celebrar com a torneig eliminatori amb 128 jugadors, entre el 20 de novembre i el 14 de desembre de 2009, a Khanti-Mansisk, Rússia.[1] El guanyador es classificaria per la fase de candidats del Campionat del món de 2011. Borís Guélfand va vèncer Ruslan Ponomariov a la final.

Format

Els matxs es disputaven a dues partides, llevat de la final, disputada a quatre partides. Els jugadors tenien 90 minuts pels primers 40 moviments, seguits de 30 minuts per la resta de la partida, amb un increment de 30 segons per moviment des de la primera jugada. En cas que el matx estigués empatat després de les partides regulars, es jugarien desempats l'endemà. El format dels tie breaks seria com s'indica a continuació:[2]

  • Es jugarien quatre partides semiràpides (25 minuts més 10 segons d'increment). Segons el periodista d'escacs Mig Greengard, un "alt càrrec de la FIDE" va admetre fora de micròfons que aquesta inusual decisió de jugar quatre partides en comptes de dues fou en error que va ser detectat massa tard per poder corregir-lo.[3]
  • En cas de continuar l'empat, es jugarien cinc parells de partides ràpides (a 5 minuts més tres segons d'increment). El jugador que guanyés un parell de partides, seria declarat guanyador del matx. Aquest fou un canvi respecte dels torneigs anteriors, per exemple respecte de la Copa del món d'escacs 2007, en què el matx es decidia amb una partida per armageddon després d'un sol parell de partides ràpides.
  • Si el marcador seguís empatat després de cinc parells de partides ràpides, es disputaria una sola partida amb sistema armageddon (les blanques han de guanyar, les negres en tenen prou amb les taules). Les blanques tenen 5 minuts, i les negres 4, i hi ha tres segons d'increment a partir del moviment número 61. En aquesta competició no es va arribar a disputar cap partida armageddon, ja que tots els matxs es varen decidir abans.

All players are grandmasters unless indicated otherwise. The pairings of the 1st round (players were seeded according to their ratings) were announced on 2 novembre 2009, immediately after the publishing of the novembre rating list. The list of players who declined participation: Anand, Carlsen, Topalov, Aronian, Kramnik, Leko, Adams, Nakamura, and Ni Hua. Among them, Anand, Topalov and Aronian are already qualified for the Candidates or the Championship match; Carlsen, Kramnik, Nakamura, Adams and Ni have committed to play in the London Chess Classic on 7–15 December 2009.[5]

Resultats

Primera ronda

In the first round of the tournament all of the top 30 seeded players progressed, with the sole exception of Slovakian Sergei Movsesian (16), who was eliminated by the Chinese 113th seed Yu Yangyi. Judit Polgár achieved a walkover, due to her opponent Duško Pavasovič withdrawing from the competition due to injury.[6] The round was notable for the 16-game match between Pavel Tregubov and Varuzhan Akobian: after each winning with white over the first two days, their tiebreak held a marathon of four rapid games followed by ten blitz games. The two players fought until near 1 a.m. local time for the right to face Ruslan Ponomariov in the second round (which would start the next morning), Akobian finally achieving the decisive two-point advantage in the final bout before an Armageddon game would have been required.

Segona ronda

The first day of Round Two included a number of upsets. The highest seed to have won their match was Aleksandr Grisxuk (8), as Piotr Svídler (3), Aleksandr Morozévitx (4), Teimur Radjàbov (5) and Vassil Ivantxuk (6) all lost and the remaining highest seeds (Gelfand, Gashimov and Ponomariov) drew. On the next day of matches, Morozevich, Radjabov and Ivanchuk were all eliminated, and exactly half of the matches went to tie-breaks.[7] Ultimately, of the 32 players to reach Round Three, all but seven players had been originally seeded in the top 32.

Tercera ronda

This round is scheduled for 27–29 novembre 2009. Sixteen-year-old Wesley So, who had upset Ivanchuk in Round Two, achieved another major upset, defeating Gata Kamsky, the 2007 winner, 1½-½.[8] In the second rapid tiebreak, Chinese players Wang Yue and Li Chao were not at their seats for the start of the round, and lost the game, and their matches against Bacrot and Gashimov.[9]

Quarta ronda

This round is scheduled for 30 novembre - 2 December 2009. It marked the departure of most of the youthful players from the World Cup. Wesley So (16), Fabiano Caruana (17) and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (19) were eliminated by the more experienced Malakhov, Gashimov and Gelfand respectively, leaving Sergey Karjakin the only under-20 player left in contention.
