The scrum of buying firecrackers for Diwali. Typical of all things here, there was only a tiny semblance of order or system so it takes some patience and aggressive perseverance, but that of course goes without saying when buying things. India loves firecrackers and for 2 days Chennai was smoke-filled and 125-decibels from 6am to 11pm on every street. Crackers and bombs, fountains and rockets, and of course sparklers and cap guns for the kids. Not wanting to miss the fun, we bought some and joined in the explosion-setting and ear-drum damaging fun. Daunted by the stock list of nearly 1000 items and unsure what all the types were, we picked ours by cool-sounding name, requesting "He-Man rockets" and a "Raiders of the Lost Ark 7-shot" as well as "Shogun bombs" and some basic crackers. They were sadly out of the He-Man and Raiders versions, so we could not experience what these might entail when lit, and had to content ourselves with substitutes. But for the cheap prices, we got far more crackers than we had the enthusiasm or hearing to light and gave some away to over-stimulated neighbourhood kids. |
