Els leptoscòpids (Leptoscopidae) constitueixen una família de peixos marins pertanyent a l'ordre dels perciformes.[1]

Etimologia[modifica]

Del grec leptos (prim) i skopein (mirar, contemplar).[2]

Descripció[modifica]

Cos allargat i amb escates. Aleta dorsal de base allargada, anal oposada a la dorsal i una mica més allargada que aquella, pectorals grans, caudal subtruncada i pelvianes jugulars i molt separades entre si. Cap deprimit i amb els ulls situats en posició dorsal o quasi. Boca lleugerament obliqua i amb els llavis fistonats. Línia lateral al llarg del mig dels flancs.[3][4]

Hàbitat i distribució geogràfica[modifica]

Es troba a les costes (de vegades, també els estuaris i, en menor mesura, els rius)[4] de les regions de clima temperat[5] d'Austràlia (des d'Austràlia Occidental[6][7] fins a Austràlia Meridional, Tasmània,[8][9] Nova Gal·les del Sud, Victòria i Queensland,[10] incloent-hi l'estret de Bass i la Gran Badia Australiana)[11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23] i Nova Zelanda.[24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34][4][35]

Observacions[modifica]

No formen part del comerç de peixos ornamentals[4] i tenen el costum d'enterrar-se a la sorra.[20]
