Sebastes és un gènere de peixos marins de la família dels sebàstids i de l'ordre dels escorpeniformes.[2][3]

Etimologia[modifica]

Sebastes prové del mot grec sebastes ('august', 'venerable').[4]

Hàbitat[modifica]

Viuen des de la zona de marees fins a gairebé els 3.000 m de fondària i sobre diferents menes de substrats (sovint, al voltant d'afloraments rocallosos).

Distribució geogràfica[modifica]

Sebastes cortezi,[173] Sebastes fasciatus,[174][175] Sebastes koreanus,[176] Sebastes mentella,[177] Sebastes nivosus,[178] Sebastes paucispinus[179] i Sebastes peduncularis[180] apareixen en la Llista Vermella de la UICN.[181]

Observacions[modifica]

Algunes espècies són molt longeves i capaces de superar els 100 anys (com ara, Sebastes aleutianus, amb un rècord registrat de 205 anys).[182] Igual que altres carnívors, aquests peixos poden bioacumular alguns contaminants o radionúclids com el cesi. Així, espècimens d'aquest gènere altament radioactius han estat capturats a prop de la central nuclear de Fukushima 1 a Fukushima (el Japó), gairebé dos anys després del desastre nuclear que va patir.[183]
