Terapon jarbua és una espècie de peix pertanyent a la família dels terapòntids.[5]

Descripció[modifica | modifica el codi]

  • Pot arribar a fer 36 cm de llargària màxima (normalment, en fa 25).
  • 11-12 espines i 9-11 radis tous a l'aleta dorsal i 3 espines i 7-10 radis tous a l'anal.
  • És de color crema a la part ventral. El cos, el cap i les aletes presenten una brillantor iridescent.[6][7][8]

Reproducció[modifica | modifica el codi]

Té lloc al mar i els juvenils migren a l'aigua dolça.[9]

Alimentació[modifica | modifica el codi]

És omnívor[10] i la seua dieta inclou peixos, insectes, algues i invertebrats.[11][6][12]

Depredadors[modifica | modifica el codi]

És depredat per Himantura uarnak i, a Sud-àfrica, per Ceryle rudis i Hydroprogne tschegrava.[13]

Hàbitat[modifica | modifica el codi]

És un peix marí, d'aigua dolça i salabrosa; demersal; catàdrom[14] i de clima tropical (26°C-29°C; 32ºN-32°S) que viu entre 20 i 350 m de fondària.[15][6][16]

Es troba des del mar Roig[17] i l'Àfrica Oriental[18][19][20][21] fins a Samoa,[22] el sud del Japó,[23] el mar d'Arafura[24] i Austràlia.[25][26][27][28][29][6][30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43][44][45][46][47][48][49][50][51][52][53][54][55][56]

És inofensiu per als humans i es comercialitza fresc, assecat o en salaó.[57][6]
