| Descripció |
English: Crystal from the cliff A sample of the crystalline gypsum which is layered in the cliffs along the River Trent below East Bridgford. It also shows the green siltstone and red mudstone layers in which it is interspersed. The formation has the name 'Gunthorpe formation' and is widespread in Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire. All this material has been mined or quarried, the mustones for brick clay and the gypsum either for plaster or as alabaster. Note the columnar, almost fibrous texture of the crystal. The 20p coin provides a scale for comparison. |
