Apropiació cultural

L'apropiació cultural[1] és l'adopció inapropiada o no reconeguda d'elements d'una cultura o identitat per membres d'una altra cultura o identitat.[2][3] Segons alguns autors, això pot ser problemàtic quan els membres d'una cultura dominant s'apropien de cultures minoritàries o marginades.[4][5] És un concepte, parent amb la folklorització, una forma condescendent d'exotisme,[6] per la qual elements genuïns d'un grup són comercialitzats en una forma simplificada sense respectar l'autoria col·lectiva, tot perdent l'autenticitat.[7][8][9] El corol·lari és la reapropiació cultural,[10] quan el grup expropiat s'amancipa i reivindica com seva els elements robats fins a exigir indemnització i reparacions.[11]
Segons alguns, l'apropiació cultural és una forma de colonialisme que difereix de l'aculturació, l'assimilació o l'intercanvi cultural equitatiu.[12] Quan els membres d'una cultura dominant copien elements d'una comunitat minoritària i els utilitzen fora del context original —de vegades fins i tot en contra dels desitjos expressos dels membres de la comunitat d'origen—, la pràctica sol ser rebuda negativament.[13][14][15][16][17]
És considerada perjudicial per diversos grups i individus,[18] entre els quals els indígenes que treballen per la preservació cultural,[19][20] els que defensen els drets col·lectius de propietat intel·lectual de les cultures originàries i minoritàries,[21][22][23][24] i els que han viscut o viuen sota el domini colonial.l[1][25][26][24] Aquesta apropiació pot incloure l'explotació de les tradicions religioses i culturals d'un altre grup, els passos de ball, la moda, els símbols, la llengua i la música.[27][28][29]
Segons els crítics d'aquesta pràctica, elements culturals es perden o es distorsionen quan es treuen del context d'origen, i aquestes exhibicions són irrespectuoses o fins i tot una forma de profanació.[19][30] Elements que poden tenir un significat profund per a la cultura original poden ser reduïts a moda o joguines exòtiques per les de la cultura dominant.[13][14][31] Kjerstin Johnson diu que l'imitador, «que no experimenta aquesta opressió, és capaç de jugar, temporalment, a ser un altre exòtic, sense experimentar cap de les discriminacions diàries a què s'enfronten altres cultures».[31] L'acadèmic, músic i periodista Greg Tate diu que apropiar-se i fetitxitzar cultures, en realitat, allunya les persones a qui pertanyen.[32]
Un altre mena d'apropiació és quan el grup dominant acapa produccions culturals o prominents artistes de l'etnia minoritària i la presenta com seus i no menciona l'origen de l'obra o de la persona.[12]
Molts crítics del concepte troben que sovint és malinterpretat o mal aplicat pel públic en general, i que les acusacions d'«apropiació cultural» s'apliquen de vegades erròniament a situacions com ara tastar menjar d'una cultura diferent o aprendre sobre altres cultures.[33][34][35][36][37] Altres diuen que l'acte d'apropiació cultural, tal com sol definir-se, no constitueix un dany social significatiu ipso facto, o que el terme manca de coherència conceptual.[38][39] A més, el terme pot establir límits arbitraris a la llibertat intel·lectual, a l'autoexpressió dels artistes, reforçar les divisions de grup o promoure un sentiment d'enemistat o greuge en lloc d'alliberament.[39][40][41] El límit entre influència, font d'inspiració i apropiació indeguda no és clar.[42]
