Hepatotoxicitat (del grec: Hepato = fetge i toxicitat) implica un dany en el fetge provocat per productes químics.^[1]

El fetge té un paper central en transformar i clarificar els productes químics i és susceptible de toxicitat per aquests agents. Certs agents medicinals en sobredosi i fins i tot en el rang terapèutic poden danyar el fetge. Altres agents químics com els usats en laboratoris i indústries, com per exemple, la microcistina i els remeis herbals poden induir hepatotoxicitat.^[2]^[3] Els productes químics que causen danys al fetge s'anomenen hepatotoxines.

Hi ha més de 900 drogues de medicaments implicades en causar dany al fetge^[4] i és la causa més comuna de retirada del mercat d'una droga de medicament.^[5] Els productes químics sovint causen un dany subclínic al fetge que només es detecta per tests enzimàtics.^[6]^[7]
