M'he trobat amb una notícia en què parla de diversos museus han alliberat versions digitals de les seves obres, no sé fins a quin punt es poden utilitzar a la Viquipèdia.

No serà tan fàcil. Per exemple, el Louvre descriu que es poden copiar les imatges, amb condicions (veure art.4):

El nostre Commons jo entenc que és una col·lecció.
Sóc més optimista en l'ús dels textos directament (interpretativament, sempre es poden fer servir), ja que està sobre la llicència francesa ETALAB similar a la que tenen els USA que "tota la producció del govern és d'ús públic". A més diu que es pot recuperar en JSON, o sigui que els botaires podran inventar alguna cosa.
4.1.2 Textual content
The textual content of the entries and the thematic albums presented on the collections website is deemed to be public information made available under the “Etalab” Open Licence (hereinafter called the “Information”).
The User has a worldwide, perpetual, non-exclusive, royalty-free right to use the Information, whether for commercial or other purposes, subject to the conditions of said licence.
In particular, the User is free to:
- re-use the Information, by reproducing, copying, adapting, modifying, retrieving and transforming it to create derivative information, products or services,
- share, disseminate, redistribute, publish and transmit the Information,
- exploit the Information commercially, for example by combining it with other information or by including it in the User’s own product or application.
Les fotografies "representing works that are not protected by copyright" que siguin senzillament reproduccions de quadres ja es podien pujar a Commons, fins i tot si el museu i la legislació del país del museu no ho admetien.
