Theraps és un gènere de peixos pertanyent a la família dels cíclids i a l'ordre dels perciformes.[1][2]

Etimologia[modifica]

Theraps prové del mot grec therops (similar a una bèstia salvatge).[3]

Paràsits[modifica]

Són parasitats per Posthodiplostomum, Neoechinorhynchus, Uvulifer, Cotylurus, Homalometron, Rhabdochona, Crassicutis, Genarchella isabellae, Saccocoelioides i Ascocotyle.[4][5]

Hàbitat i distribució geogràfica[modifica]

Són peixos d'aigua dolça, bentopelàgics i de clima tropical,[6] els quals viuen a l'Amèrica Central:[7] les conques dels rius Usumacinta, Candelaria, Polochic, Grijalva, Motagua i Papaloteca al vessant atlàntic de Mèxic (Chiapas i Tabasco),[8][9][10][11][12] Belize,[13][14] Guatemala (com ara, El Petén)[15] i Hondures (el departament d'Atlántida).[16][17][18]
