El torneig d'escacs Tata Steel, és una competició d'escacs que se celebra anualment, habitualment el gener, al petit balneari de Wijk aan Zee, que forma part del municipi de Beverwijk, als Països Baixos. S'havia anomenat anteriorment Hoogovens Schaaktoernooi (torneig d'escacs dels alts forns) fins que el grup Corus el va començar a esponsoritzar partir del 2000. De 1938 a 1967, es va celebrar a Beverwijk. Des de l'adquisició de Corus per Tata Steel, el torneig ha passat a anomenar-se actualment Tata Steel.[1] La sèrie d'edicions del torneig han continuat numerant-se seqüencialment des del seu inici, de manera que l'edició de 2011 fou el 73è Torneig d'escacs Tata Steel al lloc web oficial, tot i que va ser la primera en què s'emprava el nom de Tata Steel.[2]
Tot i que el torneig principal, o torneig "A" està reservat per als jugadors d'elit, el Corus acull també jugadors de nivell mitjà als torneigs "B" i "C". La participació en els torneigs és per invitació, i el guanyador del torneig "B" és tradicionalment convidat al torneig "A" de l'any següent. El format actual dels tres torneigs és la d'una lliga de 13 jugadors, tots contra tots, a una sola volta.
Des de 1938, la llista dels vencedors és plena de noms il·lustres: Max Euwe (4 cops), Bent Larsen (2 cops), Tigran Petrossian, Paul Keres, Iefim Hèl·ler (3 cops), John Nunn (3 cops), Nigel Short (2 cops), Lajos Portisch (4 cops), Borís Spasski, Mikhaïl Botvínnik, Mikhaïl Tal, Víktor Kortxnoi (4 cops), Anatoli Kàrpov (2 cops), Vladímir Kràmnik, Garri Kaspàrov (3 cops), Viswanathan Anand (5 cops) i Magnus Carlsen (7 cops, el rècord). De fet, dels campions del món clàssics posteriors a la II Guerra mundial, només hi falten Vassili Smislov i Bobby Fischer. El 2001, hi van participar nou dels deu millors jugadors mundials del moment.
Magnus Carlsen és el jugador que més cops ha guanyat el torneig, amb set títols. Viswanathan Anand és l'únic altre jugador que ha guanyat cinc o més edicions del torneig Hoogovens/Corus en la seva llarga història, tot i que tres de les victòries foren compartides. Anand també ostenta el rècord de més partides consecutives jugades en el torneig sense cap derrota (70; des de 1998 a 2004). Max Euwe, Lajos Portisch i Víktor Kortxnoi varen guanyar el Corus quatre cops cadascun.

Fets destacats de les darreres edicions
[modifica]L'any 1999 és notable gràcies a una famosa victòria de Kaspàrov contra Topàlov, una autèntica obra mestra, considerada com una de les més belles partides de tots els temps.
El 2000, Garri Kaspàrov va guanyar el torneig amb 1,5 punts d'avantatge.
El 2001, hi van participar nou dels deu millors jugadors del món.
El 2003, Anand va guanyar amb 8,½/13, per davant de Judit Polgár, la millor jugadora femenina del món.
El 2004, Viswanathan Anand, amb 8,½/13, també va acabar en primer lloc al torneig "A", per davant de Péter Lékó i Michael Adams amb 8/13. Aquest mateix any el jove prodigi noruec Magnus Carlsen (13) va guanyar el torneig "C".
El 2006, el torneig "A" el guanyaren Viswanathan Anand i Vesselín Topàlov, mentre que Magnus Carlsen fou primer ex aequo del torneig "B".
El 2007, Vesselín Topàlov va guanyar novament, empatat amb Levon Aronian i Teimur Radjàbov, qui als 19 anys, fou el més jove guanyador la història del torneig.
Aquest rècord va ser batut el 2008 per Magnus Carlsen, que va acabar primer (empatat) del torneig "A" als 17 anys.

El format de cadascun dels tres gups de GM va continuar essent el de 14 escaquistes jugant tots contra tots a una roda. Els participants del grup A incloïen vuit dels deu millors jugadors del món (país, puntuació i posició en el rànquing entre parèntesis): Viswanathan Anand (Índia, 2801, 1), Vassil Ivantxuk (Ucraïna, 2787, 2), Vladímir Kràmnik (Rússia, 2785, 3), Vesselín Topàlov (Bulgària, 2769, 4), Péter Lékó (Hongria, 2755, 5=), Xakhriar Mamediàrov (Azerbaidjan, 2752, 7), Teimour Radjabov (Azerbaidjan, 2742, 8) i Levon Aronian (Armènia, 2741, 9). Els altres jugadors eren Borís Guélfand (Israel, 2736, 11), Michael Adams (Anglaterra, 2729, 13), Magnus Carlsen (Noruega, 2714, 16=), Judit Polgár (Hongria, 2708, 20), Pàvel Eliànov (Ucraïna, 2691, 26) i Loek van Wely (Holanda, 2679, 31). La puntuació mitjana de 2742 el van convertir en un torneig de Categoria 20. Els únics dels deu millors jugadors de món que no hi van participar van ser Aleksandr Morozévitx (Rússia, 2755, 5=) i Aleksei Xírov (Espanya, 2739, 10).
El torneig fou guanyat per Levon Aronian i Magnus Carlsen (ambdós obtenint 8 punts de 13).
El Grup B de GM va ser guanyat per Sergei Movsesian d'Eslovàquia amb 9½ punts, i el grup C per Fabiano Caruana d'Itàlia amb 10, dos punts per sobre del ser rival més pròxim. El grup Honorari, una nova categoria consistent en quatre antics campions del grup A jugant tots contra tots a dues rodes, va ser guanyat per Ljubomir Ljubojević amb 4 punts de 6, seguit per Jan Timman, Víktor Kortxnoi i Lajos Portisch.
