l of the district is constantly shift-ing. In the three years of its history, with an averageof not more than five workers at any one time in thefield, there have been sixteen different members of themission. And of its existing force of seven members,five have been connected with it less than four months,and but one has been there more than one year. Ourcongregations are equally unstable, and we prosecutethe work under limitations in these respects, and othersnot herein named, which render it an open questionwhether we can establish in Hawaii a permanent mis-sion. Nevertheless, the results of these four years of laborin this distant field were blessed. Thousands heardthe word; hundreds believed and were saved. Biblesand tracts in large quantities were sold and distributedamong the twenty thousand people dwelling on theislands. Churches and classes were formed in eightplaces. The Japanese opposed our withdrawal and urgedthe re-opening of the work. Some resolved to work in-dependently.

A COMPREHENSIVE view of the rise and progress^ of the Liberia Mission would necessarily includemuch of the history of American slavery and of the slave-trade on the western coast of Africa. The colony itselfwas in part born of that missionary spirit which, like arising tide, came in upon the Churches during the firstquarter of the present century. Some contemplated itas a Christian nucleus on the border of a vast continentof corruption, from which the Gospel might spread intothe interior. Others desired it as a wall against theslave-trade, which then surged upon every part of thecoast. The interest felt by many in establishing a col-ony on the west coast of Africa arose, doubtless, chieflyfrom
