Deutsch: Hochseeboot mit Ausleger und „Krebsscheren“-Segel; Taumako / Nifiloli; Santa Cruz-Inseln; Die krebsscherenartige Segelform hat den gleichen Wirkungsgrad wie eine (über die Außenränder gemessene) rechteckige (wie in Windkanalversuchen erkanntwurde). Vermutlich wird mit der eingebuchteten Form des Segels unter seitlichem Wind ein zu starker Druckanstieg vermieden („Strömungsablösung“) und damit die Nutzwirkung verstärkt. Das einseitig am Segel beferstigte „Ziergehänge“ dient zur Turbulenzkontrolle.
Bei seitlichem Wind kann das Boot in entgegengesetzte Richtung fahren ohne zu wenden: Es ist nur das Segel vom „Bug“ nach „achtern“ in das dortige Widerlager zu setzen, Stützmast und Segelstande sind umzulegen. Dieses Boot (te puke bzw. alo folafolau) wurde auf Taumako gebaut und zu Reisen und Handelsfahrten innerhalb des Archipels der Santa Cruz-Inseln von der (polynesisch bevölkerten Insel) Nifiloli aus benutzt. Sein Besitzer gab ihm den Namen „Maunga Nefe“ (ein Berg auf der Insel Vanikoro, die Heimat der Totenseelen). Das Boot ist das letzte seiner Art. Es wurde im Jahre 1967 nach Berlin überführt. Der Bootskörper ist in traditioneller Weise mit Tonschlamm vom Meeresgrund für die Hochseefahrt präpariert.English: Bluewater outrigger boat with a crab-claw sail; Taumako / Nifiloli; Santa Cruz-Inseln. The crab-claw sail is as efficient as a square sail of the same overall dimensions (as tested in windtunnels). Presumably the scooped-out outline of the sail prevents flow separation by channeling the wind across the sail, avoiding concentrations of pressure. The dangling "ornaments" the sail provide turbulence control (near edge of picture). When reaching, the boat can reverse direction without turning. Only the sail must be turned from "forward" to "astern".
This boat (te puke or folafolau) was built on Taumako and sailed out of Nifiloli; it was used for travel and trading within the Santa Cruz archipelago. Her owner named her "Maunga Nefe“ after a mountain on the island Vanikoro, the home of the dead. The boat is the last of its kind. It was brought to Berlin in 1967. The hull is prepared for bluewater travel in the traditional manner, with clay slip made from ocean-bottom sediments. |
