Mulatu Astatke (Jimma, Etiòpia, 1943) és un músic compositor, percussionista, vibrafonista i teclista[1] etíop reconegut per ser el pare del subgènere musical del jazz anomenat ethio-jazz que combina el jazz amb la música tradicional etíop,[2] l'afro-funk, la música soul i els ritmes llatins.[3]
Nasqué a Jimma, al sud-oest d'Etiòpia, i es crià al país fins que als 16 anys (a l'any 1959) fou enviat al Nord de Gal·les.[4][2]Abans d'anar-se'n, a meitat de la dècada del 1950, ell, junt a Mahmoud Ahmed i Gétatchew Mèkurya, va crear el gènere que el faria famós.[5]
El 2009 publicà l'àlbum musical Inspiration Information, fet junt al grup musical de funk experimental d'Anglaterra The Heliocentrics.[6]
El 2013 publicà el seu àlbum musical Sketches of Ethiopia.[7]
