English: The Norwegian iron bark Superb was built by Alexander Stephen & Sons on the Clyde at Glasgow, Scotland, in 1875 although she was launched with the name Airlie. Originally sporting a full ship-rig, she was first owned by David Bruce's Dundee Clipper Line but was later sold to W. Montgomery of London. Sold by Montgomery in 1900, she was then purchased by A. Meling of Stavanger, Norway, who renamed her Superb and had her cut down to a bark to save on crewing costs. A large and successful vessel, she was registered at 1,515 tons gross (1,393 net) after conversion and measured 246 feet in length with a 38 foot beam. Designed for the Australian and New Zealand emigrant trade, she had accommodation for about 500 passengers in addition to her extensive cargo capacity and was still afloat and trading in 1914.[1] |
