The Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahri. Edouard Naville worked at Deir el-Bahri under the aegis of

the British Egypt Exploration Fund from 1893-7 and agaim 1903-6 when he discovered Mentuhotep’s temple tp be seen on the left. It lies in ruins, but its original appearance has been partially determined by careful archaeological work. From 1911 until 1931, Herbert Winlock directed excavations for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the area south and east of the Hatshepsut Temple. A major restoration program was conducted between 1930 and the start of WWII. The Egyptian Antiquities Service employed Emile Baraize to excavate and restore the Lower and Middle Terrace porticos. In the early 1960s the Egyptian authorities authorized a complete restoration of the Upper Terrace of the temple. President Nasser wanted a team from a Socialist (non-Western) country, and the Polish experts had a lot of experience in restoring their own historical monuments destroyed during WWII. Kazimierz Michalowski, the first director, was a highly reputed Egyptologist. He and other Polish specialists supervised Egyptian restorers for what became an extended joint mission
