OPTIQUE. 283 était formé dun miroir de lm,47 de diamètre. Le tuyauavait 12 mètres, et lobservateur se plaçait à son extré-mité, une forte lentille à la main, pour regarder limage.Le grossissement pouvait élever jusquà six mille fois lediamètre du corps observé. Afin de donner au télescopelinclinaison convenable pour chaque observation, Herschelavait fait établir limmense appareil de mâts, de cordageset de poulies que représente la figure 63 que nous don-nons. Toute la construction reposait sur des roulettes, eton la faisait mouvoir tout dune pièce pour lorienter àlaide dun treuil. Lobservateur se plaçait sur une plate-forme suspendue à lorifice du tube, à peu près comme lesfauteuils accrochés à ces balançoires qui ont la forme devastes roues, et quon voit aux Champs-Elysées à Paris.
