El text alternatiu, és un text relacionat amb una imatge que serveix al mateix propòsit i transmet la mateixa informació essencial com la imatge. [1] En situacions on la imatge no està disponible per al lector (potser perquè s'han desactivat les imatges en el seu navegador web, o està fent servir un lector de pantalla, a causa d'una deficiència visual) el text alternatiu garanteix cap informació o funcionalitat es perd. [1] text alternatiu absent o és poc útil una font de frustració per als usuaris cecs de la web. [2]
