Measuring Catalan Wikipedia Community Health: Are We “Open” to Community Growth and Renewal?

La Viquipèdia ha fet vint anys i és el recurs de coneixement lliure, multilingüe i col·laboratiu més gran de la història de la humanitat. Tot i que el projecte té un èxit innegable en moltes dimensions, des de la popularitat mundial i la difusió geogràfica fins a la seva adopció fins i tot entre professionals i acadèmics, el cert és que no ha pogut seguir fent créixer les seves comunitats d'editors, i la salut de la comunitat és un tema recurrent de debat entre els viquipedistes.

En aquesta presentació volem parlar-vos del projecte Community Health Metrics (CHM) destinat a mesurar i entendre diferents aspectes de la salut comunitària, i proposem la creació de 6 indicadors que anomenem Signes Vitals. Estan relacionats amb la capacitat i funció de la comunitat per créixer o renovar-se. Tres estan enfocats a tot el grup d'"editors actius" que creen contingut: retenció, estabilitat i equilibri; els altres tres estan relacionats amb funcions comunitàries més específiques: permisos, desenvolupament tècnic, documentació i coordinació de projectes i espais comunitaris globals. Creiem que mesurar les comunitats en aquests àmbits pot ser valuós per planificar i prevenir riscos futurs.

Hem estudiat la Viquipèdia en català extraient les de dades disponibles dels historials d'edició. En aquesta presentació proporcionarem resultats detallats per a la llengua catalana juntament amb d’altres edicions de la Viquipèdia per poder-la comparar. Intentarem respondre preguntes com ara: la comunitat catalana és capaç de retenir més editors al llarg del temps millor que d’altres llengües? La Viquipèdia en català està equilibrada quant a la inclusió de nous membres i el manteniment dels antics? Es concedeixen drets d'usuari (per exemple, rols com administradors) a nous editors?

Sabem que al moviment Wikimedia hi ha múltiples iniciatives destinades a millorar l'experiència d’usuari i a implementar un Codi de Conducta. Ens podem preguntar, per què és tan difícil implementar-los i començar a revertir el declivi de la comunitat pel que fa al nombre d'editors actius. De fet, com d’altres objectius de cabdal importància, creiem que assolir una bona salut comunitària depèn de molts aspectes i és responsabilitat de tothom.

Després de fer una ullada ràpida a les dades, volem convidar-vos a passar una estona discutint amb nosaltres sobre quines accions podríem dissenyar i implementar com a membres de la nostra comunitat. Creiem que unint esforços a diferents nivells (comunitats, afiliats i Fundació Wikimedia), i plantejar-nos objectius clars en un horitzó a curt mig termini podem aconseguir que les comunitats tornin a créixer de nou.

Wikipedia has reached its second decade, being the largest multilingual and collaborative free knowledge repository in human history. Even though the project is undeniably successful along many dimensions - from worldwide popularity and geographical spread to its adoption even among professionals and academia - it has been unable to continue growing its editor communities, and community health is a recurring topic of debate among Wikipedians. In this presentation, we introduce the project Community Health Metrics (CHM) aimed at measuring and understanding different aspects of community health, and we propose the creation of 7 indicators that we call Vital Signs. They are related to the community capacity and function to grow or renew itself. Three of them are focused on the entire group of “active editors” creating content: retention, stability, and balance; the other four are related to more specific community functions: flags, technical development, project documentation and coordination, and global community spaces. We believe that obtaining the current “active community capacities” in these areas can constitute a valuable reference point to plan to guarantee “openness” in these areas, and at the same time, to foresee and prevent future risks (e.g., bus factor). These metrics are created by mining the available data dumps of Wikimedia projects’ editing histories. We will provide detailed results for the Catalan language including its dialects along with some other Wikipedia language editions for comparison. We will try to answer questions such as: is the Catalan community able to retain more editors over time? Is Catalan Wikipedia balanced in terms of including new members over time and maintaining the old ones? Is the Catalan Wikipedia granting user rights (e.g., roles such as sysops) to new members? There exist multiple initiatives aimed at improving the site editing experience, specially dedicated to newcomers, and to implement a Code of Conduct to provide a universal baseline of acceptable behaviour for the entire movement without tolerance for harassment. Then, why is it so difficult to implement them and start reverting the community decline in terms of number of active editors? Like other goals of paramount importance, achieving good community health depends on many aspects and is everyone’s responsibility. After taking this quick look at the data, we want to invite you to spend some time discussing with us which actions we could design and implement as members of our communities and affiliates to work more effectively towards improving the presented indicators. We believe that by joining efforts at different levels (communities, affiliates and WMF), planning along with clear indicators on a short-mid term horizon, and by ensuring that we are implementing changes, we can become a more welcoming, dynamic, and productive community.
