RSS és una família de formats de canals web XML utilitzat per a publicar continguts actualitzats sovint com ara llocs de notícies, weblogs o podcasts, i per mitjà del qual es pot compartir la informació i usar-la en altres llocs web o programes. És en essència una sindicació de continguts.

El principal avantatge del sistema és l'agilitat, ja que es fa innecessari haver de descarregar les imatges i els altres elements de la web, descarregant-ne només els titulars. I també el fet de poder adjuntar el contingut de molts llocs web en un sol espai.

Un programa que usa RSS s'anomena agregador, i n'hi ha de molts tipus. Incrustats a navegadors web, widgets per l'escriptori, en programes de correu electrònic, en pàgines web dedicades i en programes dedicats.

L'acrònim RSS es refereix als següents formats: Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0), RDF Site Summary (RSS 0.9 i 1.0), o Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91).

Tot i que els formats RSS existeixen des del Març de 1999, la icona RSS ("") no es va usar àmpliament fins el 2005-2006.

Utilització

A partir d'aquest format s'està desenvolupant una cadena de valor nova en el sector dels continguts que està canviant les formes de relació amb la informació tant dels professionals i empreses del sector com dels usuaris. Bloglines, Feedster, Plazoo, Feedness, Retronimo, YourFeeds, Amazon, AllConsuming, NewsIsFree, sindic8, Blogdigger, i un llarg etcètera d'empreses estan explorant noves formes d'ús i distribució de la informació.

La sindicació no és solament un fenomen vinculat als weblogs (encara que aquest s'ha fet més patent a causa de la popularització dels weblogs). Sempre s'han sindicat continguts i s'ha compartit tota mena d'informació en format XML. D'aquesta forma podem oferir continguts propis perquè siguin mostrats en altres pàgines de forma integrada, la qual cosa augmenta el valor de la pàgina que mostra el contingut i també ens genera més valor, ja que normalment la sindicació sempre enllaça amb els continguts originals.

Agregadors de distribució lliure

• Marcel (imum.info net-reader) (Windows).
• Akregator un agregador lliure integrat a KDE per als sistemes operatius tipus Unix.
• Mozilla Firefox gestiona els canals RSS com a adreces d'interès. Disponible en català per GNU/Linux, Mac i Windows.
• Sage Extensió pel Firefox que permet organitzar els canals RSS i llegir-los a la pantalla del navegador.
• Mozilla Thunderbird gestiona els canals RSS anàlogament als comptes de correu. Disponible en català per GNU/Linux, Mac i Windows.
• Ticker un agregador lliure per a Linux/GNUstep.
