Marchantiophyta és una divisió de plantes. Com en altres plantes sense flors el gametòfit domina el cicle vital. S'estima que hi ha entre 6.000 i 8.000 espècies d'aquesta divisió algunes espècies creixen com un tal·lus però altres són folioses i semblen una molsa.
Les plantes d'aquesta divisió són normalment menudes de 2 a 20 mm d'ample i menys de 10 cm de llarg. Algunes però poden cobrir grans extensions de terreny també sobre roques o un altre substrat adient. Són cosmopolites més corrents en llocs humits però també n'hi ha algunes en deserts o a l'àrtic. algunes es fan servir en jardineria.[3]
