Els pingüipèdids (Pinguipedidae) constitueixen una família de peixos actualment acceptada,[1] tot i que en classificacions anteriors[2][3] s'incloïen entre els Mugiloididae. El seu nom procedeix del llatí pinguis (greix) i del grec pous (peu).[4]

Morfologia[modifica]

Cos allargat i recobert d'escates. Línia lateral única i situada al llarg de tot el cos. Boca terminal i protràctil. 1 única i allargada aleta dorsal, la qual té 4-7 espines curtes i 19-27 radis tous. Aleta anal més curta que la dorsal, amb 1-2 espines i 17-25 radis tous. Aletes pelvianes amb 1 espina i 5 radis tous. Aleta caudal de truncada a força semilunar i amb 13-15 radis ramificats. La inserció de les aletes pelvianes es troba per sota o una mica abans de les pectorals.[5][6]

Ecologia[modifica]

Són peixos d'aigua dolça, salabrosa i marina, els quals es distribueixen per les costes atlàntiques (Amèrica del Sud[7][8] i Àfrica),[9] l'Índic,[10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21] el mar Roig[22][23][24] i el Pacífic[25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43] (des del Japó[44][45][46][47][48] i Nova Zelanda[49][50] fins a les illes Hawaii[51][52][53] i Xile).[54][55][56][57][58][59][60][61][6][5] Són hermafrodites, territorials, reproductors pelàgics i formen harems.[6] Són depredadors bentònics de petits invertebrats i peixos.[6]
