Marcusenius nyasensis és una espècie de peix pertanyent a la família dels mormírids i a l'ordre dels osteoglossiformes.[4][5]

Etimologia[modifica]

Marcusenius fa referència a l'alemany Johann Marcusen[6] (el primer ictiòleg a estudiar els mormírids de forma sistemàtica),[7] mentre que l'epítet nyasensis al·ludeix al seu lloc de procedència: el llac Nyasa, també anomenat Malawi.

Descripció[modifica]

Fa 30 cm de llargària màxima. Absència d'espines a l'única aleta dorsal i a l'anal. Aleta caudal forcada. Boca terminal. 14-16 escates al voltant del peduncle caudal. Sense barbetes sensorials ni aleta adiposa.[8][9]

Alimentació[modifica]

Menja insectes i plantes aquàtiques.[10]

Hàbitat i distribució geogràfica[modifica]

És un peix d'aigua dolça, demersal i de clima tropical,[6] el qual viu a Àfrica: les llacunes, planes d'inundació[8] i indrets pantanosos de fons fangós[11] del riu Shire[12][13] i el llac Malawi[14][15][16][17] a Tanzània,[8][18] Malawi[14][19] i Moçambic.[14][20][3][6]

Observacions[modifica]

És inofensiu per als humans[6] i el seu índex de vulnerabilitat és de baix a moderat (31 de 100).[21]
