Gymnothorax thyrsoideus és una espècie de peix marí pertanyent a la família dels murènids i a l'ordre dels anguil·liformes.[6][7]

Descripció[modifica]

Fa 66 cm de llargària màxima,[8] tot i que, normalment, en fa 40.[9] 125-137 vèrtebres. Les dents vomerianes són biserials.[10] És de color blanquinós o groc clar (força esquitxat de petites taques marrons) i amb la meitat frontal del cap de color gris violaci. Iris blanc. L'origen de l'aleta dorsal es troba a mig camí entre l'obertura branquial i la comissura de la boca. Dents còniques (cap com a canines) i formant dues fileres. Línia lateral contínua.[11]

Reproducció[modifica]

És de fecundació externa[12] i el seu suposat hermafroditisme simultani no ha estat confirmat.[13]

Alimentació[modifica]

Es nodreix de crustacis bentònics i peixos.[14] El seu nivell tròfic és de 3,98.[15]

Hàbitat i distribució geogràfica[modifica]

És un peix marí, associat als esculls (entre 0 i 15 m de fondària, normalment fins als 4)[8] i de clima tropical (36°N-33°S, 70°E-130°W), el qual viu a la conca Indo-Pacífica:[16][17][18][19] des de l'illa Christmas[20] fins a la Polinèsia Francesa[21] -incloent-hi les illes Tuamotu[21]-, les illes Ryukyu,[22] Tonga[23] i la Micronèsia[21] -com ara, Guam[24] i les illes Marshall[21]-, incloent-hi les illes Maldives,[25] l'Índia,[26] el mar d'Andaman,[27][26] la mar de Sulu,[28] les illes Filipines,[28][29] la mar de Cèlebes,[28] Malàisia,[30] Indonèsia,[31][32] Nova Guinea -com ara, la badia de Milne[33]-, Cambodja,[34] Tailàndia,[35] el Vietnam,[36][37] el mar de la Xina Meridional,[38] el mar de la Xina Oriental,[39] la Xina [40] -incloent-hi Hong Kong[41]-, Taiwan [42] -com ara, les illes Pescadors[43] i Lutao[44]-, la mar Groga,[45] el corrent de Kuroshio,[22] el Japó[22][46] -com ara, les illes Ogasawara[47]-, Austràlia,[48][49][50] la Gran Barrera de Corall,[51] el mar del Corall,[9][52] Nova Caledònia,[53][54] les illes Kermadec[55] i la Samoa Nord-americana.[56][3][57][58]

Observacions[modifica]

És inofensiu per als humans,[57] el seu índex de vulnerabilitat és de baix a moderat (30 de 100)[59] i tolera compartir el seu hàbitat amb altres murènids.[60]
