Alguns zoòlegs divideixen el búfal aquàtic en dues o tres espècies; el búfal aquàtic domèstic, el búfal de les Filipines i el búfal aquàtic silvestre, aquest darrer és l'antecessor del búfal aquàtic domèstic.[2] Alguns búfals són búfals nans a causa del nanisme insular.[3]
