Elops machnata és una espècie de peix pertanyent a la família dels elòpids.[2]

Descripció[modifica]

Reproducció[modifica]

Fresa probablement al mar, tot i que les larves, transparents, migren a les zones costaneres i es troben sovint en aigües salabroses.[7][8][9]

Alimentació[modifica]

Joves i adults es nodreixen de peixets i crustacis.[10]

Depredadors[modifica]

A Sud-àfrica és depredat pel tauró de puntes negres (Carcharhinus limbatus)[11] i el pigarg africà (Haliaeetus vocifer).[12][13]

Hàbitat[modifica]

És un peix d'aigua marina i salabrosa, bentopelàgic,[14] pelàgic-nerític, oceanòdrom i de clima tropical (38°N-37°S, 22°E-153°W), el qual viu a les aigües costaneres i entra a les llacunes i estuaris.[15][3]

Distribució geogràfica[modifica]

Es troba des del mar Roig fins a Mossel Bay (Sud-àfrica),[16][17][18][19] l'Índia[15][20][21][22][23] i el Pacífic occidental.[24][3][25][26][27][28][29][30][31][6][32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42][7][43][44][45][46][47][48][49][50][51][52][53][54][55][56][57][58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65][66][67][68]

Observacions[modifica]

És inofensiu per als humans i comestible, encara que no és saborós i està ple d'ossos.[69][3]
