Hi ha prop de 640 músculs esquelètics en el cos humà, i gairebé tots els músculs es constitueixen en parelles de músculs (del costat dret o esquerra), el que resulta en aproximadament 320 parells de músculs. No obstant, el nombre exacte és difícil de definir ja que, segons les fonts, hi ha diferents grups de músculs que es poden definir com a diferents parts d'un sol múscul o, per contra, com a diversos músculs.
